Thursday Night Racing

New and old sailors alike gather on our beautiful Hillsborough Bay for a tradition unlike any other. Davis Islands' Thursday Night Series has been the biggest sailing series in the South. New sailors have learned the skills of the persons who were in their shoes years ago. Racing sailboats keeps us happy. To join a boat, visit the Membership Committee table next to the upstairs bar on Thursday night and let the members know you are "crew looking for boat." They will get you paired up with a boat. Whether you have experience or not, those interested in sailing are welcome to visit and become the guest of a captain and learn more about sailing. The club bar is open (accepting cards only, no cash) and meals are available for those guests who have joined a crew for the evening.

Like to join us for Thursday night racing? Here's how:

Remember that we sail during Daylight Savings Time only,  in 2024, we will sail from April 18 to October 24th. You may join us here on any Thursday in this time frame. Sign up with your name, contact information and skill level (novice is perfectly ok) here.

Some helpful tips: Please be at the Yacht Club by 5:00. Park outside the front gate and walk into the grounds. The main dining room is located on the second floor of the building.

Come to the Membership Desk, and we will help to place you with a boat. We will get you a ride. Just please note that sailing is not a synthetic experience--you will be in the weather and participating with other people on a moving and sometimes unstable platform. You may get wet. Your items may get wet. You will have to move--i.e. you will need to be relatively agile. The skippers are welcoming you on their boats--you will be asked to help out and be part of the team.  No one is paid--we are all volunteers. And, you will have fun and make friends.

On this night, we take credit from non-members for food and beverages. You need to wear comfortable clothing and white or clear soled shoes. We suggest you leave any jewelry you value at home.

The length of the race is determined by the wind, usually boats return to the clubhouse by 8:30 pm.

This is a great opportunity to experience sailing and to meet members of our organization. If you find this is a sport you wish to pursue, this is the place to meet skippers for all the current racing events.

In addition, please feel to contact membership@diyc.org with any questions about crewing and or boats that you are interested in sailing on at DIYC.  We also have some great education manuals and documents that will help you to become more conversant with all the sailing terms.

We race in mildly inclimate weather. We will not race in dangerous conditions. The Race Committee will make the decision to sail, or not to sail, no earlier than 6PM.

The results are posted at  https://www.diyc.org/ and on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/117962448217068/ (Davis Island Yacht Club).
