Summer Learn-To-Sail

The Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation (DIYSF) is pleased to offer summer sailing instruction for both DIYC members and non-members. Our goal is to promote the sport of sailing for the benefit of the children of the Tampa Bay area in an environment which stresses safety, good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage, respect for authority and respect for the community. The Davis Island Youth Sailing Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization and is funded through donations and proceeds from the Summer Sailing Program, as well as other events.

Cost:  $265 per session (plus a $25 annual fee per family).  A discount of $40 per session will be available for any combination of registrations for a family beginning at the 3rd session and/or child.

Session 5 - 7/08/13 thru 7/12/13, Learn-To-Sail for Opti and 420s

Session 6 - 7/15/13 thru 7/19/13 Learn-To-Sail for Opti and 420s

Session 7 - 7/22/13 thru 7/26/13, Learn-To-Sail for Opti and 420s

All sessions are one week in length, Monday - Friday, from 9:00am-4:00pm. Lunch will be provided and is included in the program fees.  Each child will receive a one t-shirt, extra t-shirts can be ordered for $10.
 
Learn-to-Sail - One-week sessions will be offered
Advanced Learn to Race - One-week sessions will be offered
  
DIYSF requires before child can attend a session;
(1) Copy of insurance card
(2) Properly completely Authorization to Consent to Treatment document
(3) Payment in full to complete registration.
 
 
Program Details
Learn-To-Sail – OPTI Prams
For Beginner and Intermediate Opti pram sailors, we offer 9 one-week sessions.  Maximum 26 sailors per session.  An "Opti" sailboat is a 1-person dingy, approximately 8 feet in length.  All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class.  Ages 8-11. All sailors must be at least 8 years old by the Monday of their registered session. Sailors over the age of 11 should register for “Learn To Sail – 420”.
 
Beginner Sailing - Skills Learned
  • Learn to rig/de-rig the 8-foot pram
  • Determine wind direction
  • Steering
  • Points of sail
  • Upwind sailing
  • Departure and landing
  • Basic boat handling
  • Tacking, jibing, weight placement
Intermediate Sailing - Skills Learned
  • Build and sharpen beginning skills
  • Emphasis on sail trim, weight placement
  • How dagger board/rudder placement enhance performance
Advanced Learn-to-Race – OPTI Prams
For the more experienced Opti sailor or with a sailing coach recommendation, we offer 2 one-week sessions.  All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class.  Ages 8-11. All sailors must be at least 8 years old by the Monday of their registered session. Sailors over the age of 11 should register for “Learn To Race – 420”.
 
Racing Skills Learned
  • Introduction to basic racing
  • Introduction to basic rules
  • Opportunity to acquire skills needed to qualify for the DIYSF Sailing Team

 

Learn-To-Sail – 420s

For Beginner and Intermediate sailors, ages 12-18, we offer 9 one-week sessions.  Maximum 12 sailors per session.  All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class.  A "420" sailboat is 2-person dingy, approximately 15 feet in length.
 

Beginner Sailing - Skills Learned
  • Learn to rig and de-rig a light, two-person dinghy
  • Focus on basic terminology of sailing
  • Safety procedures
  • Basics of maneuvering a sailboat
  • Tacking, jibing, upwind sailing, proper sail trim

Intermediate Sailing - Skills Learned

  • Brief review of rigging and safety procedures
  • Introduction to spinnaker flying
  • Introduction to trapeze techniques
  • Opportunity to acquire skills needed to qualify for the DIYSF Sailing Team

Advanced Learn-to-Race – 420s

For the more experienced sailor or with a sailing coach recommendation, ages 12-18, we offer 2 one-week sessions.  All sailors will be required to pass a swim test and capsize drill. Capsize skills will be taught the first day of class.
