Around the Point Race

February 3rd, 2018

In its second year, the Around The Point Race loosely follows our DIYC series formula of starting and finishing at DIYC. The unique element of this race is that it finishes on the “other” side of our peninsula at West Shore Yacht Club. Although not a Council club, West Shore offers beautiful dockage and amenities with a deep water approach. Just minutes away from South Tampa, after the poolside awards celebration and party, sailors have the choice of heading home or staying on the boat for the night.

DIYC Hillsborough Bay Race @ DIYC
Mar 24 all-day

“Come Hell or high water” was the phrase used by our first regatta chair, Brian Malone.  This distance race is held in Hillsborough Bay, but don’t assume it is just an afternoon cruise.  Test your navigation skills and plan to race even if the weather pipes up.  This time of year is prone to fronts.  In the internet age, most race decisions are made at the bar watching radar.  You can plan to race this one and hone your heavy weather skills, so don’t shy away if there is a blow.

DIYC Tampa to Ft. Myers @ Davis Island Yacht Club
May 25 – May 26 all-day

The race’s history dates back to 1946. 2015′s race was held for the first time over Memorial Day weekend. A resurgence of this race had 20 competitors so let’s get 30 boats for 2017.  This 100 mile coastal race has everything from a J-24 to 40′+ footers on the course.  We  added multi-hulls in ’16 and continue to grow momentum.  Of course, the destination is fabulous finishing at Ft Myers Beach – one of the remaining “Old Florida” beach towns.  ALL competitors compete for the Navigator’s Trophy donated by OH Rogers.  It is awarded to the first boat to finish in any class.

Regatta Chairs: Jamie Myers & Mike Kayusa
