2019 Commodore’s Cup Regatta

The annual Davis Island Yacht Club Commodore’s Cup regatta held January 12-13 had an excellent turnout with more than 30 racers across several fleets. Additionally, the weather was absolutely beautiful (especially compared to our friends in Northern states).

On Saturday, we began with cool temperatures and perfect winds. The distance racers set off on southerly course, while the drop-mark fleets began competitive windward/leeward courses off the entrance to the basin. The day progressed into a gorgeous afternoon that was warm with a mild breeze. The drop-mark fleets were able to finish four races before the end of the day (and before the wind completely died).

On Sunday, we were all a bit worried that the winds would be light and unfavorable prior to an approaching cold front. However, by race two of the drop-mark course, we had 12-15 knots that had filled in from the Southwest. The breeze made for a beautiful spinnaker sail for the cruising and racer-cruiser fleets on their return leg of the distance course. As for the drop-mark sailors, we changed out our sails as the wind increased and enjoyed a competitive afternoon around the buoys. Some racers had a great Sunday, while a few of us experienced equipment failures or mishaps with other vessels. Overall, it was a beautiful weekend.

Here are the top three finishers from each fleet:

Spinnaker A: 1) Delta 2) Chip’s All In 3) Wasabi

Spinnaker B: 1) Yard Goat 2) No Direction 3) Fire & Ice

Racer/Cruiser: 1) Team Effort 2) Prime Plus 3) Wing-It

Cruiser: 1) Long Gone 2) First Wind 3) Serenade

Non-Spin: 1) No Way Jose
